Where to Stay in PUERTO ESCONDIDO, OAXACA

Last year, we had the privilege of hosting our 6th international ARY Retreat in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.

When I first booked the retreat, I was certain that Oaxaca was the place but I was open to the city. ARY Retreats usually chooses locations that are up and coming or are hidden treasures. Why? because I have an affinity to explore the unknown and feel that it’s my duty to show others that mainstream isn’t always the best.

I knew that I wanted a beach town and also knew that Huatulco was the most popular place in the Oaxacan coast amongst vacation goers. But.. a small surf town caught my eye. This small town, specifically Playa Zicatela, was vibrant and filled with gorgeous places to stay.

Before the official start of any retreat, my team and I arrive a few days prior to get settled, get things ready and to make sure we’re in tune with the vibe of the town and know the general layout.

Guests usually ask for directions or recommendations, so we want to make sure we are educated on the subject before everyone arrives.

When we first settled into Puerto Escondido I was surprised how non-Mexican it was. I mean… it felt as if you were in Mexico … but there were no signs of ANY traditional Mexican places to eat. Not even Mexican-style seafood aka mariscos! Not going to lie.. I was a little bummed about it.

Oaxaca in general is quite different than any other part of Mexico I’ve ever visited. We explored Oaxaca City before getting to Puerto Escondido so had our fair share of getting to know a bit of their traditional culture.

A few thoughts on Oaxaca City before I get into Puerto Escondido:

+It’s absolutely historical and BEAUTIFUL. I felt transported back in time.

+There are tacos there..BUT not what you’re used to..think super gourmet but to them it’s normal and not gourmet (gourmet as in different ingredients than what we’re “used to”)

+Non-Oaxacan chefs steal so many traditional ideas from Oaxacan cuisine and give ZERO credit. It bums me out when anyone steals intellectual property and uses it as their own.

anywho..

+Try everything..even the questionable LOL. My husband bought a traditional cocoa drink from a street vendor and it was different but delicious. It was definitely the highlight of the day. (Tip: Use caution and your own judgement when eating on the street in any country. Cleanliness standards vary from place to place..and even person to person.. even here in the US!)

+Be open minded when finding a place to stay. I had the PERFECT place to stay in Oaxaca city- a bohemian beauty. A vision out of a DREAM!!! but.. it is not kid friendly :*(. I was bummed but found the CUTEST alternative. A conscious traveler, boutique eco-friendly hotel focused on funding the education of the local Oaxacan children. Every detail was properly thought out. From the friendly front desk staff to the daily tea offerings in the evenings. HIGHLY recommend it for those searching for a family-friendly place to stay that has heart + soul.

After a few days in Oaxaca City, we took a SMALL, tiny, little (what felt like a private jet) to Puerto Escondido. This was quite the experience! The airline was called AEROTUCAN. It had it’s own check in area at the airport but there was LITERALLY no one there until 45 minutes before the flight took off. I was slightly panicked but once I saw the agent arrive I felt much better. We checked in and almost immediately boarded. When getting to the plane , we noticed that the SAME agent who checked us in at the counter was also the same person to load our bags and confirm our seats. It was a really unique experience. Our flight was about 45 minutes and was worth every penny.

Once we settled in Puerto Escondido it was very clear was an international town. There were a few Mexicans we encountered but the majority were South Americans and Israelis.

Since it was a surf town, the cuisine was fairly light and healthy. Lots of fresh fruit, poke bowls, and smoothies.

The place we, as the staff, stayed was SO BEAUTIFUL. It was affordable, chic, and walking distance to the main strip and the beach. Check them out here: PUNTA MAYIA

Our place was conveniently located across the street from the ARY Villa. I always try to find a place they REALLY close to our guests. Since my daughter travels with us to retreats, we found it best to stay in a different location than our clients.

Overall, Puerto Escondido is perfect for those who love a modern twist to traditional Mexico. Great place to meet people from all over the world and the average age I’d say was about late 20s to mid 30s.

It has plenty of places to eat, grab a drink, and a vast beach to catch some sun and waves (if you’re into that!). I don’t recommend getting in the water to casually swim unless you are surfing or properly trained. The waves are HUGE.

If you are looking for a more calm, traditional Mexican beach experience, drive down the road about 10 minutes to Playa Puerto Angelito. Lots of locals and family friendly waves. You’ll also find the most delicious mom and pop beach front restaurant. You’ll know which one I’m talking about once you get there.. it’s the one right by the rocks. Everything we ordered was affordable AND chefs kiss! We went almost every day. Oh and..take cash since they don’t accept credit cards.

ALSO… DO THE MEZCAL TOUR with PUERTO MEZCAL TOURS. Honestly the best Mezcal I’ve had on the entire trip and the vibe is just FUN.
